The George Washington University (GWU or GW) is a private university, a co-educational one, which is located in Washington, D.C., the United States of America. It was established in 1821 as Columbian College by an Act of Congress in the District of Columbia. Since that time, it has grown into nonsectarian research institution.

GWU is located in four blocks of White House and it is well known for its undergraduate programs in International Affairs, Political Science, International Business, and Political Communications., as well as, for its graduate and doctoral business, social sciences, international affairs, education, law, public health and medicine programs.

The history of the George Washington University is as follows. George Washington, the first President of the United States of America, was trying to create a university in the District of Columbia for a long time under the auspices of government. However, this idea was not supported by anyone.  That is why Baptist Missioners raised funds in order to purchase the territory for a college in order to educate the residents of the Washington D.C.

A large building was created; nowadays it is famous as Meridian Hill. In 1821, the President James Monroe approved the creation of Columbian College in the District of Columbia by the congressional charter.
